If you suspect a water leak in your home or business, below is a fast, guaranteed way of knowing without calling your plumber.
- It's always best if you have two people to troubleshoot and have your smartphones ready to communicate.
- First, shut off any running water in your home.
- Locate your water meter. It's usually close to the street. Remove the top and lift the meter lid to view the numbers. Inside is a flow indicator. The flow indicator is the spinning wheel on the meter. It is capable of recognizing a very small amount of water leaking. If the water is turned off in your home and the flow indicator moves, you have a leak.
- There are two common shut-off valves to almost every house. One is for irrigation and one for the home. Turn off the shut-off valve to the home and recheck the meter. If the meter stops, you'll know that the pipe from the meter to the house has no leaks.
- Turn the water valve back on. This time, you're going to turn the irrigation valve off. If the flow indicator stops moving, then the leak is in the irrigation. If the flow indicator keeps moving, then the leak is in the home.
- There are two shut-off valves located on the top of your water heater. One is for hot and the other for cold. First, shut off the hot water and recheck the meter. If the flow indicator stops, you have a slab leak on the hot waterside. Complete the process on the cold side as well.

Here are a few warning signs that your slab leaks. You could see discoloration in your tiles. Some may even crack. You could feel the moisture in areas of your carpet.
